Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club are up for 2 awards at England Hockey’s annual Awards.
The Men’s 4th XI have been nominated for Men’s Team of the Year. Their 2022/23 season saw them go unbeaten across the whole season, winning 18 of their 22 games, drawing the other 4 with a goal difference of +110, scoring 132. Although not winning the league, the 4th team showed amazing consistency across the season, still being able to win when key players were unavailable or playing up a team. The team are up against Devonport Services 1sts, Lindum Hockey Club’s Men’s 1sts, Oxted Men’s 3rd XI, and Tower Hamlets Club 1st XI.
Chris Nightingale is also up for an award, being nominated for Unsung Hero after winning the club's own Jayne Parnham award for Club Person of the Year.
The 3rd team men's captain has been an integral part of the pitch and facility redevelopments since joining the club. A regular umpire, webmaster and social media offier, Chris also introduced a new electronic payment system into the whole club bringing cashless benifits easing captain and treasurer duties. He also installed smart lighting control with usage monitoring to the clubs own pitch floodlights to bring in much needed energy savings. When the snow visited this season, Chris and the team worked over 3 days to make sure the games could be played!
His most recent project is bringing in an additional cabin by the pitch to imporove pitchside facilities with the old one now relocated for training equipment storage, as well as looking into levelling out the bank on the side of the pitch for a spectator area. Nightingale will be up against Andre Tchakhotine of Old Sils, Colin Ainsworth from North Somerset, Herne Bay’s Alistair MacKinnon, and Marilyn Walker of Tulsa Hill.
Congratulations to both for being nominated on the awards! The awards night takes on Saturday 1st July at the Athena in Leicester.
