Liam Hennessy’s successful England Over 35 journey continued at the Home Nations tournament in Swansea held on the weekend of June 24th – 26th, as England took home a silver medal after facing Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.

In England’s 1st game they faced the Welsh who they beat comfortably 6-2. On the second day they faced their toughest competition in Ireland who pipped them 5-3 in a close encounter. Despite a setback against the Irish, England recovered well in their final game as they dismantled Scotland running out 7-1 victors.

The Home Nations is a great opportunity for the Masters squads to get together and prepare for the World Cup. After being delayed for 2 years due to Covid, this years Master’s World Cup will take place at Nottingham Hockey Centre from August 12th – 21st.

At the World Cup England will first have to qualify from a group consisting of Ghana, Sri Lanka, Spain and South Africa before hopefully heading into the final stages of the competition.

Sue Hughes and Rachel Evans have also been in Masters action, this time representing Wales O50s in the Four Nations tournament from 17th – 19th June at Nottingham Hockey Centre.

The ladies started with a tough game against England who were eventual winners of the tournament and ran out 7-1 winners in what was a scorching fixture.

On the following day Wales faced the Irish in a highly competitive fixture in which Wales led until late on where Ireland equalised from the penalty spot.

Wales improved with every game and faced Scotland in the final game of the weekend. It was a game which was evenly matched but Wales had significantly better chances but failed to convert in a game that finished 0-0.

With no World Cup this year and the European Championships not until 2023, Wales’ year is over until next years trials.

Club Chairman Gwynne Goodfield said “It is great to see Telford players, past or present representing their respective International teams. Liam has put in a considerable amount of work and dedication into his hockey over the last 12 months and is reaping all of the rewards now. We can’t wait to see how he gets on in August. Rachel has represented Wales for many years now which is great to see, I must say congratulations to Sue who at Nottingham made her debut for Wales.”
