Telford and Wrekin U12 junior Eddie Sykes was selected for ‘The Mercian Marauders’ U13 team which represented the Midlands in the UK Lions tournament at Nottingham Hockey Centre at the end of June.
The Mercian Marauders is picked from all of the counties in the Midlands and consists of the best 18 players in the area. The Marauders competed against other regional sides such as Wales, Ulster, Annandale and The North West to name a few.
Having been put through to the trials by Shropshire Hockey Eddie was successful in his selection to which he then took part in a variety of training sessions. Working with the England Hockey’s Performance Centre’s coaches there were several online sessions covering tactics and nutrition, as well as heading over to Stourport Hockey Cub for some work on the pitch.
Typically playing as a forward for Telford and Wrekin, Eddie found himself playing in different positions during the weekend which he thoroughly enjoyed and contributed to a midtable finish for the Marauders.
Being selected for the Mercian Marauders is a brilliant achievement for Eddie who is still in the U12 age group and is competing with players an age group above himself! Head of Junior Coaching Tom Gough said “The club are very proud of Eddie and his achievements; he is a credit to himself and the club. Eddie is a very talented lad, and I am very excited to see what else he can achieve in hockey and for Telford and Wrekin.”
