Unsung Club Hero award for Nightingale

Telford & Wrekin Hockey Clubs very own Chris Nightingale has won Unsung hero of the year at England Hockey’s Annual Awards evening!

After winning the clubs own Jayne Parham award for club person of the year, Chris has added to his trophy cabinet with England Hockey’s Unsung Hero of the Year award for all the work done behind the scenes.

Since joining the club, the former 3rd team captain has played a massive part in the redevelopment of the pitch and facilities, as well as being a regular umpire, webmaster and social media officer. Chris introduced a new electronic payment system into the whole club, easing Captain and treasurer duties. He also installed the smart lighting control with usage monitoring to the clubs LED floodlights, saving the up nearly 50% of their energy bill. When the snow paid a visit earlier in the season, Chris led a team of volunteers down to St George’s over 3 days to clear the pitch, ensuring we were one of the few teams to host games in the country that weekend.

Chris’ latest project is the addition of another cabin to improve pitch-side facilities, with our old one relocated for training equipment storage, whilst wanting to level out the banking on the side of the pitch to create a spectator area. Chris is also the man behind all the marketing on the pitch, with our sponsor banners, and the improved dugouts making the pitch recognisable as the home of Telford and Wrekin Hockey Club.

Massive congratulations to Chris, and thank you for his continued hard work for everything he does for the club!

Former Junior David Goodfield scoring for team GB

Former Telford & Wrekin junior David Goodfield scored for Great Britain on Saturday, helping GB to a 3-0 in over current world champions Germany. Nick Bandurak opened the scoring for the home side, after Zach Wallace won the penalty stroke, with Bandurak stepping up off the bench to convert into the top corner.

Goodfield scored GB’s next goal from a penalty corner. The first shot was saved by their German defence with the ball coming to the edge of the circle. Goodfield picked the ball up, took it onto his reverse, and fired the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 Great Britain. Germany subbed their goalkeeper off late into the game to try and find a way back in. Wallace won a short for GB, after being pinned into the corner by multiple German defenders, with Sam Ward putting his drag flick low into the goal.

Goodfield, the son of chairman Gwynne, came through the clubs junior ranks from an age of 10, being an integral part of the Under18’s boys team that reached the England Hockey National Finals in 2011. After being a part of the Men’s First XI for several seasons, Goodfield moved away at 18 for Sheffield Hallam University, and is now First Team Captain of National Premier League side Surbition.

Under 12s Regional Finals report

U12 Boys:

Telford and Wrekin U12 Boys travelled to Ratcliffe College on Sunday in the In2Hockey Regional finals.

They had a very strong group in front of them being drawn against Stourport, North Staffs and Loughborough Town.

Game 1 was against Stourport. The lads competed well and had their fair share of the ball and possession in the attacking half. They lost 2-0 with the fine margins making a difference in a game where both sides played some good hockey and a good spirit.

North Staffs were next who also proved to be a very strong opponent, North Staffs were ruthless taking a 3-0 lead, but Louie Lawrence scored a late consolation goal for Telford from a short corner.

Loughborough who had lost their previous two games allowed Telford to get their first win of the day after Elliot Blackie was on hand to slot home early on to give Telford the lead after some nice work by James Ashbridge down the right-hand side. More chances came and went but Telford could not convert and ran out 1-0 winners. Charlie Heath and Keertan Dhanjal were on hand to thwart any Lufbra attacks, and Seth Bunn cleared well when necessary.

A respectable 3rd place in the group stage as eventual winners Stourport beat North Staffs in the final, showing the quality of opposition that the lads faced.

Towcester were Telford’s opposition in the placement fixtures. The lads put in a strong performance but conceded an early goal to go 1-0 down. Despite Telford’s dominance and pressure they could not convert any of their chances and just fell short in a game that they should have won.

No matter, Northampton Saints were next and yet again the lads dominated proceedings but could not convert their chances. The game finished 0-0 and the dreaded penalty strokes decided the winner. Oscar Johnson, James and Louie put their hands up stepped up for Telford. James took the first and flicked into the left hand side netting to give Telford the advantage. Seth Bunn was primed in goal and saved Saints’ first stroke comfortably. Oscar was next. Low and hard was the instruction and Oscar delivered. He sent the keeper the wrong way and slotted into the bottom right-hand corner. Unsavable. Seth delivered the goods saving Saints’ 2nd stroke to send Telford into the 12th/13th play off.

Ashby were the final opposition of the day. The lads saw lots of the ball in the opening exchanges and created early chances. Not converting these chances was the story of the day and it looked like Telford were heading for another set of penalty strokes. Keertan maruaded his was down the left with some flashy inside pulls, a little 1-2 with Louie provided Louie the chance to get a strike at goal. Bang. Bottom left with 30 seconds on the clock saw Telford win their final game of the day.

The lads put in some really good performances all day against some quality opposition. They worked their socks off all day and should be proud of the way that they represented the club.

Thanks to all the parents who came to support, and Raj for umpiring! Another great day for the club!

Telford and Wrekin U12 Boys:

Freddie Morgan, Nathaniel Hale, Elliot Blackie, Charlie Heath, Oscar Johnson, Louie Lawrence, Seth Bunn (GK), James Ashbridge ©, Keertan Dhanjal

U12 Girls:

The under 12 girls team were placed in a tough group for regionals and unfortunetly lost 3-0 in the first group game against a strong Bestow side, the girls battled hard and Ellie made some great saves to keep the score line low. They then went on to play Leek where they created lots of chances and managed to win 2-0 goals coming from Alisa and Daisy. They then suffered a narrow defeat against Rugby 1-0. After the group games the girls went on to win their next 3 fixtures. 1-0 win against Northampton and 5-0 win against Stone where the girls played some of their best hockey of the day with lots of different goal scorers. The girls then went on to play there final game against Shrewsbury a local Shropshire rival and won 2-1 with a great save by Ellie in goal clearing the ball wide for Daisy to break through the Shrewsbury defence and slap the ball to Ivy who was waiting calmly in front of the goal to first time slap the ball home for the win.

The girls finished in 9th place, well done to all the girls that represented the club at the regionals, Ellie, Zara, Ellie, Amber, Molly, Niamh, Alisa, Daisy and Ivy.

Under 10s runners up at Regional finals!

U10s Regional Finals:

Another great day for the club on Sunday as the U10 boys + Ellie battled it out at the regional finals at Nottingham Hockey Centre.

The team was drawn against Leicester Westleigh, Repton and Bromsgrove in the group stage and knew they were in for a tough test.

Game 1 saw Telford dominate against Leicester Westleigh but were unable to capitalise on their dominance until late on. Ollie Morris scored after a mazey run and lovely backhanded shot which went under the busy Leicester keeper.

Repton were up next and the nerves were kicking in. Repton started well but Oakley and Ellie were solid at the back and made sure Curtis in goal had little to do! Telford found their feet and played some of the best hockey of the tournament. Ollie found Logan in the ‘D’ whose first time shot crashed into the backboard. Logan was at it again getting his second of the game with a strike from the top of the ‘D’. His celebration was Steve Bull-esque with the aeroplane in full flow. Telford weren’t satisfied with 2 and killed the game off with a 3rd in the dying minutes. Logan bagged a hat-trick to top off a perfect performance.

Bromsgrove were no match for Telford who were now in full flow and cruised to a 2-0 win to ensure that they topped the group!

West Bridgford were next in the quarter finals, a victory would guarantee a place in the top 4.

Telford were at it from the first whistle with Ollie flying down the right-hand side, he found Logan on the penalty spot to fire home. 1-0. Provider turned goal scorer for the 2nd goal as Ollie found the bottom corner with a straight strike from a short corner. Luca and Danvir who worked their socks off all day got in on the act for the 3rd and 4th. Luca’s first-time strike found the bottom corner, and Danvir finished off a brilliant team goal as Brodie and Luca’s passing was too slick for the Bridgford defence.

Beeston were next in the semi and what a game it was. A tense affair with some crunching tackles coming in from both sides. Logan missed an early chance after intercepting the ball but his partner in crime Ollie made amends and put Telford 1-0 up. Beeston equalised minutes later but Telford were not phased and continued to play their hockey. A few big hits and injuries meant the game soon came to a close and we headed to penalty strokes.

Ollie, Logan and Luca stepped up for Telford and Curtis was ready in the sticks! Ollie took the first but was adjudged to have ‘double touched’ the ball. No matter. Curtis was on hand to keep Beeston’s first one out. Low and hard was the message from the coach. Luca had other ideas and flicked the ball into the left hand side of the goal, a little nod to Goughy was a quality celebration. Curtis again the hero of the day saved the second with an outstretched left foot. Logan was next. A goal meant a place in the final. Was there ever any doubt? Logan sent the keeper the wrong way and Telford were through. Ice in the veins!

Old Sils awaited in the final who had been very impressive all day. A step too far for Telford who had started to tire and some crunching tackles followed.

Telford finished as runners up and left Nottingham as the 2nd best team in the Midlands. An unbelievable result for a brilliant group of players who have worked tremendously hard all season and deserve great credit for the way that they represented the club. Thank you to all the parents who came to support, Jodie for being manager, and Gwynne for umpiring.

Telford and Wrekin U10’s Regional Finals Team:

Brodie Goodwin, Ollie Morris, Logan Hennessy, Luca Johnson, Curtis Middleton, Danvir Lally, Ellie Lane, Oakley Burradge-Jones

Well done everyone, you should be very proud of your performances!

Mid season round up 22/23

Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club have had a busy start to their 2022/23 season. With 5 mens teams, 3 ladies teams, and a large junior section, there is always plenty happening down at St George’s.

The Men’s first XI gained promotion back to the Midlands Premier Division last season and set out with the aim of staying in the league. Tom Gough took over the captains armband from long time captain Alex Johnson, and under this new leadership they currently sit 8th in the league, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses. After back to back 5-2 home wins, the 1’s season slowed down, sitting on the wrong end of some big score lines, including a tough 8-0 defeat to title challengers Stourport. When asked, Gough told me his standout player so far this year is striker Tom Mallet, having scored 6 goals and setting up 8. Another standout in the 1’s is junior striker Ollie Brannan, who, after scoring 3 consecutive hat-tricks for the 2’s, earned a call up to the first team. Brannan, who represented Mercian Lynx at the Futures Cup in 2021, now has 15 goals to his name and looks to cement his place as a first team regular. Another regular in the first team squad is England Over 35 midfielder Liam Hennessy, who won the World Cup at Nottingham Hockey Centre during August, beating South Africa 1-0 in the final. Although the stats may read against them, the team has made fantastic progress in recent years, and now sit just one league below National League.

Moving down to Division 5 West, and sitting atop the table is our Men’s 2’s team. After winning their league last year, no one predicted the start that the team has had. With Old Wulfs having pulled out of the league at the start of the year, Telford had a bye their first week, but came storming out of the blocks in their first match, a dominant 6-0 win over Droitwich Spa. The team continued this great form throughout the first half of the season, playing 10 games and winning all 10, scoring 45 goals and conceding only 8. Captain Tom Williams – who suffered a long-term injury during preseason – took on a role as manager and handed the onfield armband to vice-captain Jon Cook. “We’ve had a mixture of 2nd team regulars as well as players rotating up and down from the 1sts and the 3rds” Williams said “which exemplifies the great state the club is in, with those players being a mix of the younger and older heads. The standouts players for us so far have been Jordan Keeble, who has been unreal in defence after returning from uni in the summer, and Luca Basini, who has been our Mr Consistency in the midfield”. Going into the second half of the season, the 2’s have eyes on promotion, and look to continue their fine form to the end of the season.

Sitting just the league below the 2nd team is Telford’s 3rd Mens XI. After finishing as runners up last season, the 3’s were looking into their new league with just the aim of survival. “Sticking with mostly the same squad as last year, the younger players of the squad have adapted fantastically to the higher tempo of the league” Captain Chris Nightingale said. After their first 10 games of the season, the team currently sit a fantastic third in their league, just 4 points behind Stone in second place. After beating Leek (the team that won their league last year) 2-0 at the start of the year, the team has kicked on from there, only losing twice and drawing twice. One of those draws included a thrilling 1-1 with Stone at St Georges, with both teams having good chances to win the game. Last seasons top goal scorer Ben Stevens has carried on his goal scoring with 4 goals this season, even after a slow start to the season, with Ben Edwards and Tommy Lauder not far behind on 3 goals each.

After a league reshuffle brought an unexpected promotion for the 4th team, there was a worry that they might struggle to compete against the higher teams. Top of the league at the Christmas break however, and unbeaten has put those fears to bed. Skipper Tom Hurst said “The success so far is very much down to the strength and depth of the squad, even with key players missing games, the team keeps on winning”. Scoring 27 goals between them and assisting a further 9, Josh Sykes and Roger Marsh have been the key players for the 4ths this season. Sykes, who can play in central, wide and forward areas, is only in his first season of mens hockey, and has provided that creative spark the team has lacked in recent years. Marsh, playing in what may be his swan song year leads the goal scoring tally for the team, looking to beat his impressive tally of 27 goals from last season. Some of the highlights of the season so far include a 9-0 thrashing of Stone to start their campaign, and in their last game before Christmas a 13-0 hammering of Lichfield 6. 6-0 up at half time, the game had 4 goals from Marsh, 3 from Harry Gough, 3 from Sykes, 1 for junior George Pittson, and 1 each for fourth team regulars Chris Cousins and James Stevens, showing the quality throughout the entire squad.

After their debut season last year, the 5th team set out this season to hold their place in the middle of Division 10 North West. Being a mix of juniors making their men’s debuts and the senior players of the club, the 5ths have had a fantastic start to their season, winning 4 and drawing 1 of their 8 games so far. The juniors that have stood out include the Keeble twins Tom and John, Sam Langford and Sukhtaj Sandhu, however the top goalscorer is currently senior player Ian Cole, who has moved from midfield to lead the front line, scoring 6 and assisting 1. The biggest result for the team was a 4-0 win over Old Wulfs 4, which kickstarted their season with the goals from Alan Brannan, Tom Keeble and 2 from Ian Cole. The 5th team has become a vital part of the club, giving up and coming juniors a chance to prove themselves in adult hockey, with some already proving they are more than capable of playing up teams, including Sam, Sukhtaj, and Tom who have all already made their 4th team debuts.

Moving over to our Ladies section, Telford & Wrekin Ladies 1st XI began the 2022/23 season with some new faces to the team, with this bringing new formations and strategies. They started off the season well, with a 5-1 win against Lichfield. From then on the team has fought hard against strong oppositions with games going both in their favour and some being tight defeats, bringing home 4 wins 1 draw from their first 10 games. 2 of these wins included a 8-0 win over Tamworth and a 7-0 win over Leicester City, with the goals across the games coming from forward Cherylynn Lane, Jodie Lane, centre-back Grace Flynn, Ladies 1st XI captain Kathryn Sinclair, and England O45 international Lorna Burns. The Ladies 1st are currently sitting middle of the league at the Christmas break with promise that the team will continue to work hard and only move up the table. 1st team captain Kathryn Sinclair’s standout player so far has been Izzy Moore “who has shown calmness and discipline to any position she is allocated. Her skills and speed enable her to play game changing passes and her tackling has been top quality! She is a young aspiring player who teams should definitely be scared of!”.

The Ladies 2nd XI have also had a great start to their 2022/23 campaign, currently sitting fourth in their league. After 9 games, winning 5 and drawing 3, they sit fourth on 18 points. 2 of those 5 wins came in 10 goal wins, the first a 11-1 win over Stone 2 at St George’s with Christine Keyser scoring an incredible 5 goals, Rebecca Sloan scoring another 3, and captain Sue Hughes, Paige Noble and Rachel Evans all adding to the score line. The other 10 goal win came against Lichfield, with St George’s proving to be a happy hunting ground again for the Ladies 2’s. The goals this time came from Erika de Graaf, Ellie Sutcliffe, Alexia Day with 2, Bella Hart with a hat trick, and skipper Sue leading from the front with a hat trick for herself. During the summer, Sue and Rachel both represented Wales Over 50’s in the Four Nations tournament, with Rachel having been in the squad for many years, and Sue making her debut for Wales.

Finally we move to the Ladies 3rd XI. After promotion to Division 5 Moorland last season, the team have carried on their great form from the end of the last season, currently sitting 2nd in the league, level on points with leaders Finchfield. Plenty of juniors have been joining in the team, and Captain Simone Rowley said “[The juniors] have settled in really well, and have helped the team with goals and assists, particularly Eliza Brannan who has impressed many, scoring 5 goals and assisting 1”. The team started off the season with a 7-0 home win against Lichfield, before beating Wolverhampton and Tettenhall 3’s 6-0, Stone 3’s 8-0, and most recently an 8-0 away win to Leek 4, with the girls gunning for back to back promotions!

Earlier this year, the club received a grant from Telford & Wrekin Council for £10,000 to install LED lighting, which will save the club nearly 50% of the energy bills. During the October half term, these new lights were installed to St George’s, meaning games can be played later in the evenings. The new LED lights were the next phase of the pitch redevelopment, after the new astroturf was installed during the summer of 2021. Chairman of the club Gwynne Goodfield said “The club has had a very successful year on and off the pitch. The installation of LED lighting completes our facility upgrade. On the pitch, the mens and ladies teams continue their quest for success with many teams looking for promotion. The junior section has progressed massively with a very successful year and is continuing to grow, with over 160 members from age 5 to 18”.
