Match Report

Telford and Wrekin fourths played away at Stone fifths on a cloudy Sunday morning. Telford were the better team from the start but some heavy marking from Stone coupled with some contentious umpiring decisions made it difficult for Telford to find any rhythm. Despite this Telford took the lead in the seventh minute. Matt Cousins playing the ball on the far right of the halfway line found Luis Parker down the right wing just outside the twenty-three-metre line. Luis drove through three Stone defenders to get to the top D where he took a shot on his reverse which flew into the bottom right. The next goal came in the twenty-fourth minute. Josh Sykes had a shot saved off a short corner and Conor Ashbridge scored off the rebound. Stone then managed to score off a short corner routine of their own. Telford took a one goal lead into halftime.

Just like the previous day, Telford started the second half with a stronger performance. Luis Parker sent a short corner into the bottom left in the fourtieth minute. Telford caught Stone with a counter attack in the fifty-first minute. A break down the left saw George Pittson send the ball to Josh Sykes just inside the twenty-three-metre line and Telford had players to spare as Josh sent the ball into the bottom left of the goal. Roger Marsh was given a ten minute yellow card in the fifty-sixth minute for dissent.

Joshua Sykes struck again in the fifty-eighth minute when George Pittson ran down the left and found Josh inside the twenty-three. Josh deftly dispatched the ball to the keepers left. George would assist Josh again in the sixty-seventh minute as Telford began to find gaps in a tiring Stone defence. A clever slip pass into the D and a disguised finish to the keepers left saw Telford take an unassailable lead. A goal one minute later was the icing on the cake when Luis Parker ran through the Stone defence to assist Conor Ashbridge for a shot into the right-hand corner from five metres out.

Man of the Match was awarded to Josh Sykes for another outstanding performance. His ability to read the game, determination to work back and help the defence and goalscoring prowess are a continuing asset to the team.
