Match Report

Telford’s Mens third team welcomed Finchfield 3’s to St George’s for their first home game of 2023. The 16 man squad included striker Tom Jones and centre back Will Lorenz.

As the rain started to pour, Telford got off the mark quickly. A poor touch from a defender let the ball run to Ben Stevens, whose awful shot was going wide until a defender at the back post turned the ball into his own goal, giving Telford an early 1-0 lead. The home side however let Finchfield back in, after keeper Dom Pritchard smothered the attacker, with the ball rebounding up off his pads and bounced into the goal. Telford regained the lead towards the end of the second half, after Roman  Randell won a short corner, with Jones smashing the ball into the corner of the goal.

With the half time score 2-1 to the hosts, Telford knew they had to play better in the second half. With a change to the style of play, Telford dominated most of the second half, with the opposition struggling to get out of their own half thanks to Telford’s press. They soon found themselves with a 2 goal advantage, after Tom Jones won another short corner, winning the ball high up the pitch. The striker produced a carbon copy of his first half goal, with the keeper rooted to the spot as the ball was fired past him.

After a period of defending, involving some great last ditch tackles from the back-line, Telford grabbed their fourth of the game. Once again another penalty corner, with Tom Jones at the centre of the action again. The ball was hit back towards injector Jon Woodrow, who without looking flicked his stick backwards at the ball, the small touch enough to fool everybody.

With the score 4-1 Telford, the fulltime whistle went, confirming Telford’s 3 points. With the aim being second place in the league, the 3’s look for another 3 points next week with an away trip to Leek, beating them 2-0 in the home match at the start of the season.
