Telford and Wrekin mixed masters game…..Trick or treat?

Telford 1-0 Lichfield.

Telford had a spooky start to game at Lilleshall under torrential rain which hampered the passage of the ball (it was moving at zombie speed) and made playing conditions very difficult for both sides. Although we created some good pressure and build up play we were unable to capitalise on early chances before Lichfield organised and started to play hockey.

Deadlock at half time with Penny keeping Lichfield from scoring any gouls including seeing off a penalty stroke that hit the upright. A half time talk encouraged all our witches and wizards to keep up the play and push forward with confidence……… “If you’ve got it, haunt it”

In the middle John, Sue and Raj put in a great performance with their passing play carving through the centre which gave 'em pumpkin to talk about. Defensively we haunted the Lichfield forwards and smothered the angles to prevent them from equalising with multiple attacks tangled up like flies caught in a web.

Then, right place, right time for our youngest witch Kate who managed to cast a conjuring spell on the ball in the attacking D, causing it to snake around the keeper and finally across the line to end the stalemate. To be frank-enstein, she was as surprised as anyone else that it went in and could barely believe what she has seen.

Jeckll (Scott) and Hyde (Roger) went wild in support on the sideline and this change in fortunes and the diminishing rainfall lifted our ‘spirits’.

Late in the second half, the Lichfield goalkeeper was narrowly missed by a flying broomstick which turned out to be a rogue stick that had been thust from the clutches of one our wizards Raj with an expelliarmus spell. Shortly after, at the top of the D, a stupefy charm caught Chris N unguarded and rendered him useless for a few important moments.

No time to let up, Lichfield fought to the very end and nearly equalised with whistle going just as the ball was struck at the top of the D. No goul given though as time was up.

As the rain eased and the game was finished under the moonlight both teams stopped for a pint of butterbeer and chips at the Wheatsheaf Inn. As the witching hour approached, we reflected on what a great hallo’win’ it was for the team.

Thanks to the umpires and also the spectaotors for venturing out in the poor weather.
