Match Report

Telford and Wrekin fourths played away at Old Wulfrunians thirds for the lunchtime fixture on a mild November afternoon. Debatable umpiring decisions throughout the game were met with curiosity, however the game was played in good spirits by both sides. Telford started the better of the two teams and tested the defence, the breakthrough coming in the eighth minute. An attack down the left found George Pittson out wide, inside the Old Wulfs twenty-three. George sent the ball to Joshua ‘The Yeti’ Carr-Yetzes five metres inside him. JCY dribbled through two defenders to get to the top of the D and smash the ball down the middle, through the keepers' legs.

Telford continued to work the ball through the midfield and earnt the first short corner of the game in the fourteenth minute. A poor pass from JCY was taken past the first runner by Roger Marsh to set up a sweeping reverse into the right corner, which the defender couldn’t stop on the line. The game started to even out and the defence played a key part for Telford. Kieran Barclay, Paul Cousins, Matt Cousins, Chris Cousins and Dave Stephenson were in rotation at the back and did a great job of making cover for each other. Dave Stephenson spectacularly deflected an Old Wulfs short corner routine onto the post five minutes before half time to give Telford a two-nil lead into the second half.

Both teams started equal to each other after the break as they struggled to release the ball to the attack. Great work down the flanks by Aaron S Black, George Pittson and Samuel Langford was supported by Chris and Matt from defence but Old Wulfs played well to break to these advances. In the fourty-sixth minute Old Wulfs scored a penalty corner. The injection was stopped quickly and the shot sent down the middle through Bradley Williams open legs. Bradley however, made several great saves in the game and that would be the only goal he would concede.

Telford then started to gain the majority of possession. A short corner routine was injected by Chris Cousins to Kieran Mountford just outside the right shoulder of the D. Kieran slid the ball under Roger to Josh inside the top left of D for his second assist in as many games. Josh powered the ball bottom right. Three-one Telford in the fiftieth minute. In the fifty-eighth minute George Pittson worked the ball down the right into the D to the baseline. George battled with two defenders to get the ball to JCY three metres left of the ‘P’ spot. JCY flicked the ball across goal onto the right post and in.

In the last minute of the game Matt Cousins went on one of his classic runs. Receiving the ball way out right in his own half, Matt proceeded to dribble up the wing through five players without breaking stride and take the ball baseline right in the D. He fired the ball across to Alan Brannen who got down on his knees four metres out and level with the right post to shoot only for the diving keeper to make the save. Luckily Conor Ashbridge had positioned himself perfectly on the ‘P’ spot to grab the rebound off the keeper and calmly finish into the bottom left for his third of the season and the last goal of the game.

Matt Cousins played another great game in defence but Joshua Carr-Yetzes pipped him to Man of the Match. Great work-rate enabling him to break down attacks, create attacks and bag himself a hattrick!
