Telford 3's V Wednesbury 1's Match Report

Telford Mens 3rd team travelled away to Wednesbury 1's, who sat rooted to the bottom of the league having not won yet this season. The 14 man squad included Matt Denver and Sahib Dhanjal returning after a few second team cameos.

The game started lively, with Telford quickly winning a short corner, however Dhanjal was judged by the umpire to be in the 'D' leaving Jon 'Moet' Woodrow to be sent to the half way line. Nothing came of this short with tempers already starting to rise from the back line of Wednesbury. The first goal of the game came from the left hand side to Ben Stevens, who drove into the 'D' before finding Ben Edwards, who smashed his reverse past the Wednesbury 'keeper.

Telford kept the pressure on a fustrated Wednesbury, who struggled to create any clear cut chances. A quick break down the right hand side for Telford saw Stevens in space on the baseline in the 'D' but the final pass couldn't find his target. Another quick break fell to Roman Randell, who beat a Wednesbury defender and found Stevens who took a few goes but eventually got the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0 to Telford.

On the stroke of half time, Stevens found Dhanjal on the top of the 'D', who continued this weeks episode of 'Weekly fails' with a reverse shot from outside the 'D' flying past the Wednesbury 'keeper, hitting one post before hitting the side netting on the other side. Captain Chris Nightingale was convinced the ball was inside the 'D' with Wednesbury's captain unhappy with some Telford players, before squaring up to the Telford skipper.

The half time team talk came, with Telford starting to get frustrated with the way Wednesbury were playing the game, however they reset and stayed calm, knowing the second half would play out just like the first.

Telford kept a heavy press on Wednesbury, however a quick counter-attack from the home team, scoring past Dom Pritchard in the Telford goal. Telford asked the question of obstruction to the umpires, as Ash Gillum was blocked off by a Wednesbury player as he tried to stop the player on the ball, however the umpires agreed that the goal would stand.

Telford soon regained their 2 goal advantage, through once again a counter-attack, this time Edwards found Tommy Lauder, who slotted home for his 3rd goal of the season. The game became more scrappy after this goal, with Edwards receiving a green card along with a Wednesbury player after a disagreement infront of the umpire, before Edwards' green was upgraded to a yellow after he heard the Telford player still unhappy about the decision. The Telford defence stayed strong and calm, leaving Pritchard hardly touching the ball.

The game finished 3-1 to Telford, promoting them to third in the league after other results went their way. Next week, a home game against Shrewsbury 2's at 4:30. Many thanks to Robin for managing our subs in the absence of Cassie.

MOTM went to Roman Randell, with DOTD going to Ben Edwards.
