Match Report

Telford 2s looked to continue their good run of form when they welcomed Edgbaston 3s to St George’s. Missing Tom Bullock, Matt Hadley-Moore and Luca Basini from the previous week, Telford did however welcome back Will Lorenz and Owen Shave. The message before the game was to start fast and for Telford to stamp their authority early. This was rewarded when on pitch captain Jon Cook pressed the Edgbaston backline winning the ball on the 25 before playing a beautiful one two with Tom Jones, with Cook tapping the return ball past the keeper on the stretch. 5 minutes later Telford had their second, Adam Phizacklea having a shot that Owen Shave was on hand to turn in at the back post. Shortly after, Telford made it 3-0 with Jones squeezing ball past the keeper after good work on the left hand side from Sean Huffer. Telford were able to move the ball calmly around the back and saw out the rest of the half with limited threat coming the other way – what threat there was was calmly dealt with by the Telford backline, Luke Stacey showing some strong tackling on the right hand side and Will Lorenz displaying good hands to get himself out of trouble towards the end of the half too.

At half time Telford knew they had control of the game but needed to up the pace which had dropped as half time approached. Telford had their fourth goal of the day inside 10 minutes of the second half in bizarre fashion. Huffer’s strike into the D, looping into the air off a defending stick, deflected off the goalkeeper’s pad to Cook who was on hand to tidily tap home his second. Shave then bagged his second of the day following a ball into the D from Phizacklea, deflecting off the keeper into Shave’s path to tuck home from close range. After scoring his first goal of the season for the 2s last week, Sammy Brazier made it two in two after being set up by Huffer, he showed good close control to work himself a yard of space before flicking the ball into the far corner of the net with the keeper helpless. Close to the end of the game, Shave then bagged his first hat trick for Telford to cap a great forward’s performance, with a trademark back post tap in after good work in the D from Tom Jones. Not to be outdone, Cook then sealed his hat trick with a minute to go, set up by Huffer for his fourth assist of the day, Cook managed to stroke the ball home into the bottom corner to make it 8-0.

Man of the match went to Jon Cook for his hat trick and all round all action display, narrowly edging out fellow hat trick hero and pressing machine Shave.

Next week Telford have their rearranged game away to Droitwich, looking to extend their 13 game winning streak.
