Match Report

Table topping Telford 2nds welcomed second place Finchfield 2nds to a sunny St George’s with Telford looking to extend their winning start to the season. Telford took control of the game early, moving the ball around and retaining possession well. Despite that early possession it was a tentative start to the game in an attacking sense with little threat on either goal. That was until after 15 minutes when Telford won a short corner, despite the corner breaking down, they retained possession with Matt Hadley-Moore managing to find Owen Shave on the top of the D who flicked the ball into the rigging with real intent to open the scoring. Finchfield were able to start offering some more threat but with the Telford backline of Will Lorenz, Luke Stacey and Tom Bullock holding strong, however Telford unfortunately lost Jordan Keeble to injury. Shortly before halftime, Telford were able to make it 2-0 with Callum Nightingale smashing the ball across goal where Shave was able to miraculously kill the ball with his first touch in mid air and tap the ball over the line with his second. At half time the message was to tighten up some of the lax areas of Telford’s game and look to exploit the space more, knowing that the game was there for the taking.

Within ten minutes Telford had their third of the day, Callum Nightingale winning the ball back and finding Sean Huffer on the left hand side. Huffer then fired off a trademark reverse stick shot from the baseline and found the far corner with the keeper unmoving. Five minutes later Telford made it 4-0, Huffer showing good work on the baseline on the right hand side of the goal before returning the favour by setting up Nightingale who showed off his golfing abilities with a massive swing to power the ball past the keeper. At this point sloppiness crept back into Telford’s game with keeper Nathan Capes dealing well with a one v one. However Telford were unable to keep their clean sheet and conceded two in quick succession giving Finchfield hope of a come back. As the second goal went in, Telford unfortunately also lost Lorenz to injury. However, the break in play helped Telford regain their composure, with Huffer squeezing the ball over the line in the last few minutes for his second of the day and killing off hopes of a fight back to close the game out 5-2.

Man of the match went to Owen Shave for a great all round performance and two well taken goals that set Telford up well for another 3 points. Next week Telford travel to Worcester looking to continue their current run of form.
