Match Report

Telford 2s welcomed University of Birmingham 5ths to a late push back at a damp and chilly St George’s. Missing Luca Basini, Ollie Brannen, Matt Denver and Sunny Sahota from the previous week, Telford did however welcome back Tom Jones from injury as well as the returning Sahib and Raj Dhanjal as well as 2nd team debuts for Ben Stevens and Sammy Brazier. On a good run of form, Telford knew the challenge against today’s opposition would be tough with UoB one place behind them in the table, albeit with Telford having a game in hand. UoB started the stronger, moving the ball quickly and penetrating through the Telford midfield far too easily for the home side’s liking. Through a combination of tremendous last ditch defending from Will Lorenz, Tom Bullock and Jordan Keeble in particular as well as a string of saves from man of the match Nathan Capes in goal, Telford managed to keep the score at 0-0. As the half went on, Telford played more on the front foot, giving the opposition less respect and putting them under more pressure. This paid off when, with 5 minutes of the first half to go, Tom Jones found Sean Huffer in space on the top of the D. Huffer took several touches to his right, looking like the chance might have gone, before lashing a hit across the keeper into the far corner to open the scoring. Telford lost Raj to a green card late in the half but held strong up to the break. Going into half time the goal was exactly what Telford needed with the message to keep up the intensity as the haribo were passed around.

Within 10 minutes of the restart Telford had their second, Jones once again finding Huffer in the D to squeeze the ball over the line. Telford were now enjoying themselves, playing with intent and putting UoB under real pressure. To add to his two assists Jones then got a goal of his own, a straight strike from a short corner hitting the top of the back board. With the defense playing well and terrific performances from Gareth Hawkins and Matt Hadley-Moore in the middle, Lewis Moore, Sammy and Sahib out wide and the massive shift put in by the forwards, Telford rounded out the win when good pressure by Ben Stevens led to Jones with time on the ball midway inside the D dispatching a strike that took the skin off the ball, leaving the keeper with no chance, for his second of the day.

Telford now travel away to Burton looking to continue their great start to the season.
