Match Report

Telford 2s looked to continue their good start to the season with the visit of Sutton Coldfield 3rds to St George’s. Welcoming back Tom Bullock, Matt Hadley-Moore and Sunny Sahota, with Bradley Williams stepping into goal, Telford were however missing both Jordan Keeble and Tom Williams through injury as well as Gareth Hawkins. In the mid-afternoon sunshine though Telford came storming out of the blocks, taking the lead within the first minute. John Perry took a quick free hit, showing good work to cut out several Sutton players and finding Sean Huffer on the baseline who put the ball across goal to captain for the day Jon Cook unmarked at the back post to deflect the ball home first time. Within another minute Telford had their second, Lewis Moore finding Ollie Brannen to finish well past the Sutton keeper. 10 minutes later Cook had his second of the day, striking the ball cleanly past the keeper at the near post from the top right of the D having been found by Matt Hadley-Moore. Telford were playing well and dominating possession with Sutton finding it hard to break out albeit with the odd moment of danger mostly of Telford’s own making. Ollie Brannen grabbed his second of the game with a well taken short corner drag flick into the top left corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Brannen completed his third hat trick in three games with another drag flick, this time low into the bottom corner on the stroke of half time (making up for an incredible open goal miss a few minutes earlier). 5-0 up at half time, the message was to avoid complacency and look to solidify the centre of the park. Within ten minutes of the restart, Brannen had his fourth of the day. Good work down Telford’s right hand side found Lewis Moore on the baseline who pulled the ball back well for Brannen to finish with aplomb. Not to be outdone, Jon Cook also grabbed his third of the day, finishing well having been set up by Tom Jones. Sutton were able to pull a goal back from a well taken corner of their own as some sloppy moments crept into Telford’s play, albeit Will Lorenz at centre back put in a great performance to keep Sutton at bay with Bradley Williams in goal also making some smart saves. Desperate to get in on the scoring act, with two minutes to go, Sean Huffer scored a trademark reverse from the left side of the D having been set up by Brannen. Sutton converted a corner with the last touch of the game for it to finish 8-2. A great team performance which moves Telford up to second place in the table, with a game in hand over first placed Finchfield. Jon Cook not only got the jugs in, but also took home the man of the match award for his hat trick and great all round performance. With the mid season gap week next week, Telford’s next game is a trip away to Edgbaston where they will be looking to continue their winning start.
