Match Report

Telford 2nds returned after the festive break welcoming Stafford to a chilly St George’s. After a convincing win for Telford in the reverse fixture Stafford were looking to make amends and improve their position for the second half of the season. Telford however started brightly with Tom Williams picking up a loose ball before picking out a run out wide from Tom Jones. The ball was then played to the top D where it broke for John Perry to christen his new stick with a thunderous strike into the rigging leaving the keeper with no chance. The second goal for Telford quickly followed, good work with Matt Hadley-Moore smashing the ball to the back post for Will Gough to tap in with his first touch after coming on off the bench. Telford were playing most of the game in Stafford’s half with some long balls being dealt with comfortably by the Telford backline of Williams, Will Lorenz, Henry Whitwood and Luke Stacey making his return to the 2nds. After some good work by Gareth Hawkins in the engine room he picked out Jorge Hadley-Moore on the top of the D. With everyone expecting a reverse stick shot, Jorge set his space before unleashing an uncharacteristic strong side shot into the bottom corner. Shortly before half time a short corner was struck by Tom Jones from top D, with the ball in the air and deflecting into the net off the keeper, there was an umpires inquest as to whether the shot was too high before the goal was given to add to Jones’ tally for the season. Leading 4-0 at half time Telford knew that they were capable of playing better than they and the scoreline had shown. The second half was a frustrating affair with Telford struggling to find their passing rhythm but with good performances from the likes of Tom Bullock and Will Gough in the middle enabling Telford to continue probing the Stafford backline. Lewis Moore also went close after out muscling the backtracking Stafford defender but couldn’t challenge the keeper. Telford’s pressure eventually gave way to a fifth goal with their best move of the half. The ball progressing from their own half and down the left-hand side before Matt Hadley-Moore played the ball into the D for Tom Jones to finish for his second goal of the game with a deft touch. Telford travel next week to second placed Old Wulfs for a top of the table clash to try and extend their lead at the top of the table.
