Match Report

Telford and Wrekin Men’s 1st XI welcomed local rivals Bridgnorth on Saturday as 2nd faced bottom in the final game of the half season before the Christmas break.

The hosts flew out of the blocks scoring the first goal of the game within the first five minutes. Callum Stacey’s drag flick deflected into the top right corner to make the score 1-0. Minutes later it was 2-0 as the reliable Dave Tracey converted from the penalty spot as Stacey’s drag flick hit the defender on the line.

Tom Mallett ended his ‘goal drought’ in style scoring a drag flick which found the top right corner of the goal.

Half time came with Telford 3-0 up. The key message from Suchy was to stick to the plan but also continue to put pressure on the Bridgnorth defence. Telford were superb in the second half, again restricting Bridgnorth but also being clinical in front of goal and moving the ball well.

Telford’s 4th goal came from Tom McKittrick who scored his first 1st XI goal which was well assisted by Tom Mallett who found the young forward free at the back post to finish with a deflection. Liam Hennessy got in on the act scoring from a brilliant counterattack from the hosts which pierced the Bridgnorth defence like a hot knife through butter.

Tom Mallett got his 2nd and Telford’s 5th with another drag flick but the pick of the bunch was for his hat-trick. After a patient passing move Telford pierced Bridgnorth’s defence with Liam Hennessy finding Tom Gough with a first-time pass. Gough linked with Dave Tracey who put it on a plate for Mallett to get his hat-trick.

A clinical and professional performance from Telford leaves them sitting 2nd in the league at the halfway stage and a solid platform for them to kick on moving into the 2nd half of the season.
