Match Report

Telford and Wrekin Men’s 1st XI travelled to Burton on Saturday in the penultimate game of the first half of the season hoping to extend their lead over 3rd placed Sutton Coldfield.

The visiting side started well dominating possession and entering Burton’s ‘D’ on several occasions. The deadlock was broken by Callum Stacey who continued his hot form from penalty corners. His drag flick found the bottom corner to give Telford an early and deserved lead.

Stacey almost doubled the lead minutes later, but his drag flick was saved well by the Burton keeper onto the post and clear. Dave Tracey and Tom Mallett also went close but could not convert.

Burton got themselves level on the counterattack. Despite the ball appearing to come off the backstick of the Burton forward the goal was given leaving the game evenly poised at 1-1 at half time.

Telford pushed to win the game in the second half and their passing game was in motion. Some lovely passing moves created chances and penalty corners for the visitors but the ball simply would not find the back of the net.

Callum Stacey hit the post yet again after another superb stop from the Burton keeper and Tom Gough’s follow up effort as smothered well. Telford could simply not find a way past Burton’s keeper who made some excellent saves throughout the game.

Heading into the final 10 minutes of the game the match was abandoned following a head injury to Burton’s forward. Although not appearing a serious injury at the time the sensible decision was made to stop the game, and everyone at Telford wishes Burton’s player a speedy recovery.

Telford welcome Shropshire rivals Bridgnorth next weekend in the final game before the Christmas break. This will be the first time that the two Shropshire sides have met in a league game since 2016.
