Match Report

Telford and Wrekin Men’s 1st XI travelled to Birmingham on Saturday to face an Edgbaston side who had previously shown good home form but had not replicated this feat on the road.

Telford were missing Jack Mallett and Liam Hennessy through injury but welcomed back defender Vince Richardson and forward Tom McKittrick.

The visitors started the game well winning early penalty corners. Callum Stacey dispatched one of these into the goal to give Telford a 1-0 lead. Further chances and dominance continued but the goals did not come.

Despite dominating possession Telford looked vulnerable on the counterattack, which Edgbaston exploited well throughout. The hosts equalised and then took the lead through a penalty stroke leaving Telford trailing 2-1 at half time.

Some wise words by acting coach and manager Alex Johnson and Liam Hennessy rallied the troops in an attempt to get Telford back into the game.

The second half was a scrappy affair with both teams going down to ten men and having chances without converting. Dave Tracey was on hand to equalise for Telford as Tom Mallett’s reverse shot ballooned to him at the back post.

Telford continued to push and press for a winner in the final ten minutes, and it looked like the game was going to finish with honours even.

Showing great character in the second half Telford got themselves a deserved winner with less than five minutes to play. Luca Basini scored his first 1st team league goal to celebrate his 21st birthday this weekend. After a melee in the ‘D’ the midfielder pounced on the loose ball to give Telford a 3-2 lead.

Telford controlled the final few minutes of the half as Edgbaston received red and yellow cards. Having only lost one game this season Telford are hot on the heels of leaders Stourport, and travel to Sutton Coldfield next weekend who are five points behind in third place.
