Match Report

Telford and Wrekin Men’s 1st XI looked to get back to winning ways on Saturday following the 3-1 defeat to Stourport 2 weeks ago.

There were several changes to the side with Liam Hennessy and Callum Nightingale on holiday, as well as Tom McKittrick and Phil Bailey being unavailable. Will Gough was called up for his 1st team league debut, Luke Stacey also returned from his hamstring injury to give Telford a 15-man squad.

The first 10 minutes was a very even affair with both sides creating chances but failed to convert. Telford opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Tom Mallett’s reverse shot was deflected in by Noah Higginson on the goal line.

Worcester drew level from a short corner minutes later, but Telford retook the league through Callum Stacey whose drag flick was perfectly placed into the left-hand side of the net.

The second half was a tense affair with both sides having chances but again these chances were squandered. Telford conceded several short corners, but Neil Davies and his troops stood firm to maintain the narrow one-nil lead.

With 10 minutes to go Telford gave themselves some breathing space by making the score line 3-1. Tom Mallett’s touch in the ‘D’ fell to Sunny Sahota whose diving effort crawled under the keeper to give Sahota his first league goal in over a decade.

Worcester went down to 10 men in the final five minutes which allowed Telford to control the game until the final whistle.

A far from perfect performance but Telford got the job done on a day where they could have come unstuck against a solid Worcester side.

Telford welcome Olton 2nd XI next Saturday at St George’s, 1:30 pushback.
