Match Report

Telford and Wrekin Men’s 1st XI suffered their first defeat of the season against table toppers Stourport on Saturday in front of a big crowd at St George’s.

New signing and Man of the Match Jack Mallett made his debut for the club and also saw the return of Phil Bailey who has been in training for a few weeks. Legendary defender Chris Heath missed out with a precautionary hamstring injury.

Telford got off to a slow start and found themselves 1-0 down after 5 minutes when Stourport scored from a short corner rebound. Stourport doubled their lead after a reverse stick shot gave Neil Davies stood helpless. With 15 minutes on the clock Telford were 3-0 down with Stourport hitting Telford on the break on numerous occasions.

The hosts settled into the game and chances fell to Tom Mallett and Noah Higginson, but the forwards could not convert.

Half time came with a clear message to continue to press high and take the game to Stourport.

Telford dominated the second half creating several chances and winning multiple short corners. Dave Tracey got a goal back for the hosts latching onto a rebound from Callum Stacey’s drag flick.

This gave Telford the momentum going into the final 10 minutes of the game and continued to press and put Stourport under pressure. Tom Gough fired high and wide and other penalty corners failed to find the net and the match finished 3-1.

A very competitive game against a good side showed that Telford are capable of competing with anybody in the league. With no game next weekend due to the half-term break, Telford face Worcester in 2 week’s time away from home in an attempt to get themselves back to winning ways.
