Match Report

On Saturday the Men’s 1st XI travelled to Warwick which proved to be a good test for the team ahead of next weekend’s top of the table clash against Stourport.

The team was unchanged following last weekend’s superb victory over North Staffs with the exception of Tom McKittrick who was awaiting a PCR test result but is all in the clear now.

With Warwick looking to frustrate Telford from the offset it was essential that the visiting side got off to a good start. Noah Higginson opened the scoring for the third week in a row deflecting Tom Mallett’s cross. Callum Nightingale doubled the lead after Tom Gough weaved past a couple of Warwick defenders, the midfielders connected as Cal quickfire shot beat the keeper down to his right.

Half time came at a good time for Telford as Warwick began to grow into the game. Tom Mallett got the visitors off to the perfect start in the second half as Sunny Sahota won the ball on the halfway line, he found Telford’s top scorer in space down the left-hand side and Mallett did the rest, working his way into the ‘D’ and firing the ball into the goal.

Sean Huffer got his first goal of the season scoring from close range to make it 4-0. Telford were cruising but added two quick goals in the final 2 minutes of the game to make the score line 6-0.

Callum Nightingale got his second of the game from a short corner breakdown, as well as Sean Huffer grabbing himself a brace with almost the final touch of game. Some excellent work from Noah Higginson allowed Telford to counterattack, Higginson showed good strength and vision to find Tom Gough in the final third. His ball into the D was finished by Duffer with a full stretch dive.

A superb win for Telford who had to work very hard to earn the three points against a Warwick side who battled till the final whistle and was a real test of their discipline and character.

Next week brings the top two teams together at St George’s, 1:30 push back.
